Learning Pathway

Learning Pathway

Introduction

A Learning Pathway is a specialized, coherent sequence of study within a broader curriculum. It might represent a specific certification track, a micro-credential, or a focused thematic route. Pathways help subdivide large programs into clearer, goal-oriented “tracks” for learners who want to focus on particular skills or outcomes.

Key highlights of a Learning Pathway include:

  • Targeted Track: Focus on an area like “Marketing Specialization” or “Professional Certification.”

  • Prerequisites: Optionally define which other pathways, courses, or modules a learner must complete first.

  • Sequence: Order Pathways in a logical flow under a single curriculum.

  • External Links: Can reference an activity definition system or Education Cloud for deep data integration.

Properties

Property Name
Description

LearningCurriculumId

Points to the overarching curriculum under which this pathway sits. Ensures learners and instructors see the Pathway within the correct program context.

Type

Identifies the kind of Pathway, such as "General," "Credential," "Micro-credential," or "Personalized." This helps classify your Pathway’s purpose and scope within the curriculum.

Name

A short title to recognize the Pathway (e.g., “Marketing Specialization” or “Micro-credential: Advanced Data Analytics”).

Description

A more detailed explanation of what the Pathway includes. Outline key goals, expected learning outcomes, or the target audience.

Sequence

A numeric ordering field. If you have multiple specialized tracks under the same curriculum, sequence them so learners and staff can see a recommended or logical progression.

LearningActivityDefinitionId

A field that ties this Pathway to external activity-tracking or analytics systems. Useful when capturing engagement data or correlating it to learning objectives across your institution.

CreatedDate

The date/time automatically set when the Pathway is created.

ModifiedDate

The date/time automatically updated when changes are made to the Pathway.

Example

Suppose within a “Business Administration” curriculum, you define a “Marketing Specialization” Pathway. You detail what marketing courses it includes, set Type to “Credential,” and add a thorough description about how it leads to advanced marketing roles. For external analytics, you might populate LearningActivityDefinitionId with a unique code recognized by your data platform.

Use Case

An educational institution wants to offer a specialized “Data Analytics Pathway” inside a broad “Information Systems Curriculum.” This Pathway includes its own set of advanced data courses, each requiring a fundamental course as a prerequisite. Learners who follow this track can earn a micro-credential, and the institution can easily track engagement using the Pathway’s unique activity definition reference.
